Rain is continuing across large parts of Australia ahead of Easter celebrations amid fears a 7000km rain band will wreak havoc over the long weekend.

Popular holiday destinations in Queensland like Noosa, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns and Hamilton Island are forecast for heavy falls of 15mm on Thursday. 

Showers will ease on Good Friday with scattered showers of up to 5mm to continue to impact much of the east coast throughout the long weekend. 

Southeast Queensland will continue to be pounded with up to 70mm of rain this week with Fraser Coast and Wide Bay to receive falls of up to 100mm. 

Forecasters are keeping a close eye on a 7000km cloud band stretching from the Northern Territory to the east of New Zealand this week. 

Large parts of Victoria, Queensland and NSW are expected to be impacted by the rain bomb as holiday hotspots receive a soaking ahead of the long weekend.

Brisbane

Southeast Queensland will continue to be pounded with up to 70mm of rain this week with Fraser Coast and Wide Bay to receive falls of up to 100mm.

The soggy conditions are the after-effects of ex-tropical cyclone Megan combining with a low-pressure trough stretching across the NT and Queensland. 

The coastal trough is expected to impact South East Coast, Wide Bay and Fraser Coast areas over the next 48-72 hours. 

Experts say some isolated falls across the region could total 200mm. 

A shower or two is forecast for Brisbane this coming long weekend, with temperatures to reach a maximum of 28C. 

Melbourne

Weather in Melbourne is expected to hot and sunny over the long weekend with temperatures to reach 30C before a cool change on Sunday. 

Temperatures are expected to drop to 21C on Monday, as northerly wind shifts southerly, with the possibility of showers. 

In central Victoria, including Melbourne, about 1mm of rain is forecast with the central-east and eastern district, including Gippsland, to receive 5mm. 

The cool change will start in the state’s west before moving east.

Sydney

The Easter long weekend in the Harbour City will be dry and a little cooler than other eastern states as temperatures remain stuck in the mid-20s range. 

A few scattered showers are expected on the morning of Good Friday, however these are expected to clear on Saturday and Sunday. 

Showers will return on Monday, impacting the state’s far-west and north. 

Popular holiday destination Byron Bay, in NSW’s north, will receive showers throughout the long weekend with temperatures to reach just 25C. 

ACT

People heading to the nation’s capitol for Easter will be welcomed with cool and dry weather, before the mercury soars to 27C on Saturday. 

However, the ACT will also receive showers of up to 10mm on Monday.

Adelaide

Those in Adelaide are in for a warm but mostly clear Easter weekend with daytime temperatures reaching 31C on Saturday. 

A cool change will arrive on Monday, with forecasts of tops of 22C and rain. 

Perth

Aussies on the west coast will have a warm but cloudy Easter long weekend. 

Temperatures will reach 30C on Saturday and 31C on Sunday.

Hobart

Weather in Hobart this long weekend will remain cool and dry with temperatures to reach a high of 23C on both Friday and Saturday. 

Like most of the country, a cool change will arrive on Monday. 

Darwin

Darwin is forecast is for a more wet, humid and stormy Easter, with rain, thunderstorms expected.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast up to 10mm of rain on each day of the long weekend before skies clear on Monday. 

Temperatures will reach 34C before falling to 24C on Monday.
