Thursday’s afternoon game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals has entered a rain delay.
The game was delayed after the conclusion of the fifth inning as rain poured down at Kauffman Stadium. There was thunder and lightning throughout the afternoon at the ballpark.
After the grounds crew initially started to bring the tarp onto the field, the umpire told them to keep it off, and they tried to dry up some puddles on the infield. But after meeting and seeing the field conditions continue to get worse, the umpires put the game in a delay and brought the tarp back out.
With the Royals leading 2-1 at the conclusion of five innings if the game were not to continue, it would be considered an official game and a Kansas City win.
There is a minimum 30-minute period between the time the game officially enters a delay and when it can be called.
The runs in the game had been scored by a Salvador Perez two-run homer and an RBI single from Ernie Clement.
Jose Berrios had thrown 67 pitches for the Blue Jays and Cole Ragans had thrown 76 for the Royals.
Kansas City has won two of the first three games of the four-game set.
