Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan is stable in hospital after a knife attack at his home left him with multiple wounds.

The attack happened early in the early hours of the morning in Mumbai, where he lives in an apartment with his wife, Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan, and children. The 54-year-old reportedly sustained six knife wounds, one of which was close to his spine, and underwent emergency surgery.

Dr Nitin Dange of Lilavati Hospital told reports that the actor had “sustained a major injury to the thoracic spinal cord due to a lodged knife in the spine.”

The knife was removed and repairs were made to leaking spinal fluid. Two other “deep wounds” one on his left hand and one on his neck, were also repaired. His team have released a statement saying he is “out of danger.”

Reports say Khan had a scuffle with an unidentified man who had gained access to his home. Police have said the man’s identity is “unknown. After the entry, “An argument broke out between Khan and the intruder,” Mumbai’s Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam told the BBC, leading to the violence.

Khan’s reps have said the incident was an “attempted burglary,” and noted that his wife and two young children are safe. We have reached out for further comment.

No-one has been arrested as yet, but police are investigating. A senior officer told the Indian Express newspaper that the assailant likely used a building shaft to enter the high-rise apartment, as CCTV had shown no-one entering the building around the time of the attack.

Khan has acted in over 70 films. He is known for his roles in Bollywood hits such as Yeh Dillagi, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Hum Saath-Saath Hain and action dramas such as Tanhaji and NTR Jr’s Devara: Part 1. He also starred in Netflix’s first Indian series, Sacred Games, in 2018. Further back, he played Iago in Othello adaptation Omkara.

He comes from a storied Indian family, with his father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, captaining the Indian cricket team in the 1960s and his mother, Sharmila Tagore, also a prominent Hindi and Bengali actress. His sister, Soha Ali Khan, is also an actress, while his wife is among Bollywood’s hottest stars, having appeared in the likes of Ajnabee, Chameli, Dev, Omkara, 3 Idiots, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Jaane Jaan, the Netflix title that marked her first streaming release.
