Does ‘Moana 2’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?

Your kid’s favorite wayfinder, chief’s daughter and Polynesian princess is back in Moana 2, a sequel to the beloved 2016 animated feature. The Disney movie sweeps Moana and Maui into another perilous, sea-set adventure, with Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprising roles as the titular heroine and the self-absorbed but lovable demigod.

Set three years after the pair’s first widely watched team-up (Moana was the most-streamed movie of 2023 in the US, according to Nielsen), Moana 2 introduces new characters, including Moana’s younger sister, Simea. Expect a new, ragtag crew, a formidable storm and the return of the menacing Kakamora, as Moana seeks out a pivotal, ancient island. 

Originally conceived as a TV series, Moana 2 is different from the upcoming live-action remake of the first Moana, which stars Johnson and is scheduled to hit theaters in 2026. The animated film includes music by Opetaia Foaʻi, Mark Mancina and the songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear. Does Disney’s Moana 2 have a post-credits scene?

If you want to catch a bit more of Moana 2, you should prepare to stay seated for one midcredits scene. The clip lasts for about a minute and starts after the song Beyond plays during the credits.

Moana 2 tasks its heroine with reaching the cursed island of Motufetu in order to reconnect the people of the ocean. It won’t be an easy feat, as she faces a brutal storm courtesy of the power-seeking god Nalo, who’s intent on keeping everyone separated. Before encountering the nasty weather, Moana and her seafaring friends get stuck inside a giant mollusk housing the mysterious (and seemingly villainous) character Matangi.

Despite her bat-filled abode and affinity for keeping demigods as prisoners, Matangi turns out to be one of the good guys. She reunites Moana and Maui so they can take on the storm and imparts some wisdom about “getting lost” — the gist is that as a wayfinder, Moana can find new ways forward rather than just relying on what’s familiar. Matangi helps the movie’s heroes behind Nalo’s back, and she is unwillingly tethered to her unappealing clam home.

Matangi’s advice comes in handy, and Moana ultimately does pull off reconnecting the ocean. Those wondering what happened to the bat lady will have to wait until the mid-credits scene. 

In this bonus sequence, the audience sees not just Matangi, but also Nalo, who’s upset Moana broke his curse. Matangi doesn’t own up to her role, but it isn’t looking good for her anyway, as Nalo bellows “we’re just getting started.” Then, with evil laughing, one of the villains of the first Moana movie comes into view: the scavenging crab Tamatoa. Nalo isn’t amused, zapping off what’s left of his rusted collection of shiny things. That doesn’t stop Tamatoa from talking about himself, and debuting a song called Funky Crab Legs, which you definitely won’t find on the Moana 2 soundtrack.
