Just when it seemed like nothing could stop Alexander Ovechkin early in this NHL season, potential disaster struck.
The 39-year-old left the Washington Capitals‘ game against Utah on Monday after a knee-on-knee collision with opposing forward Jack McBain.
Ovechkin stayed on the ice in seeming pain for some time before gingerly making his way to the Capitals’ bench, where he was examined by medical staff. Soon after, he was helped down the tunnel.
The Capitals captain had scored twice earlier in the game to take over the NHL scoring lead with 15 in 18 games and close to within 27 markers of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time career record of 894.
Ovechkin also potted a hat trick one night earlier against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Now, though, the record pursuit may be put on pause.
There was no immediate update on Ovechkin’s status.
Washington was leading Utah 4-2 at the time of the injury.
