Canada’s Kadeisha Buchanan suffers torn ACL, out for season

It’s been a rough string of injuries for the Canadian women’s national team.

Canada and Chelsea defender Kadeisha Buchanan has suffered a torn ACL and will be out for the remainder of the season, club manager Sonia Bompastor announced Saturday.

“I have sad news to share with you,” Bompastor said, per BBC Sport. “We found out the results this morning but she did tear her ACL after the Liverpool game.”

Buchanan suffered the injury in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Liverpool last Sunday in the Women’s Super League.

Chelsea, as a whole, has dealt with a bevy of injuries as of late. Buchanan joins teammates Sam Kerr, Sophie Ingle and Mia Fishel on the sidelines because of similar ACL injuries.

“She was performing very well,” Bompastor said about her star centre-back. “She was an important player for us but now this is the situation. So we just now are going to support her as much as we can … she’s strong, she’s okay. She will have surgery and then we have to move on.”

Additionally, the Canadian women’s national team will also have to deal with the loss of forward Cloé Lacasse, who suffered a ruptured ACL and sprained MCL in October.

Buchanan, 29, has been a mainstay on the CANWNT, logging 154 caps since 2013. She joined Chelsea in 2022 and has made 54 appearances with the British club.
