The Sony Rewards program is ending, but not forever.
Sony is ending its current rewards program and rolling cardholders into the PlayStation Credit Card Rewards program. If you have a Sony Visa® Credit Card* or were thinking of applying, the card will look different starting Jan. 1, 2025.
What’s going on with the Sony reward program?
Unfortunately, your Sony Visa card stopped earning rewards on June 20, 2024. The last day you can redeem any rewards still attached to your account is Dec. 31, 2024. After that date, the Sony Rewards app and website will be taken offline.
Any points you don’t use by that date will expire. You aren’t able to receive a check for any unredeemed rewards, either. Instead, you have to choose from Sony’s catalog. If you don’t have enough points for anything, Sony is offering to sell you additional points for 1 cent per point.
But the PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card* can still earn rewards until Dec. 31, 2024. After that, you’ll likely be contacted about a new rewards program.
What if I want to cancel my Sony Visa card?
If the card is no longer useful to you and you’re not interested in the new rewards program, then this may be a good time to cancel.
However, the card doesn’t have an annual fee and closing it could potentially hurt your credit score. Your card’s credit limit contributes to your total available credit, which in turn impacts your credit utilization. If you close a credit card, your credit utilization could go up, which could negatively affect your credit score.
If you won’t be tempted to spend unnecessarily, you might want to hold on to the card just in case. With the release of the PlayStation 5 Pro today, having a credit card that earns Sony or PlayStation rewards could come in handy. The upgraded console offers a boosted GPU and automatic AI upscaling, among other features.
