Montreal Canadiens defenceman Justin Barron is considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury and will not participate in practice, the team announced Wednesday.
During Tuesday’s 7-2 loss to the Rangers, the 22-year-old took a hard hit by New York captain Jacob Trouba in the third period.
After getting taken down and appearing to hit his head on the ice, the young blueliner immediately went to the team’s dressing room. No penalty was called on the play.
After the hit, Mike Matheson, Barron’s defensive partner, dropped the gloves with the Rangers star. For the fight, Matheson was given a two-minute instigator penalty and a 10-minute misconduct, leaving Montreal without both Matheson and Barron for the remainder of the game.
While the hit was scrutinized on social media, ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski reports on X that Trouba will not receive any supplemental discipline from the NHL Department of Player Safety.
Barron, a Halifax native, has one goal in six games with the Canadiens this season. In 2023-24, he recorded seven goals and six assists in 48 games.
