Maple Leafs’ John Tavares out vs. Penguins with illness

The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without forward John Tavares as they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Hockey Night in Canada.

After missing morning skate, the Maple Leafs revealed later Saturday that Tavares is unavailable for the game due to an illness.

Forward Mitch Marner and defenceman will wear the “A” as assistant captains in Tavares’ absence.

Toronto is 1-1 as it enters its third game of the season. Tavares scored his first goal in Thursday’s win over the New Jersey Devils. The tally is his lone point of the season so far, but he has registered six shots on goal.

You can catch all the action as the Maple Leafs square off with the Penguins in their home opener from Scotiabank Arena on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.
