Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov suffered what appeared to be a lower-body injury during a loss to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.
The incident occurred in the final minute of the third period. The star forward was backchecking a rush from Ottawa’s Tim Stutzle, trying to prevent an empty-net goal that would put the game away.
He had lost his stick earlier in the play, then tried to prevent the shot with his body and got tangled up with the Senators forward, crashing into the boards.
It took Barkov some time to get up, and he ultimately had to be helped off the ice and back to the locker room by his teammates. He put no weight on his right leg as he was skating off.
After the game, Panthers head coach Paul Maurice had no update on Barkov, stating, “He’s going to get looked at here tonight and probably tomorrow as well.”
Barkov, 29, was a key contributor to the Panthers’ Stanley Cup-winning run last season. He had 23 goals and 57 assists in 73 games for Florida last season and won his second Selke trophy.
