Fact or Fiction: There will be at least three more five-star WRs

Rivals national recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman is joined by national analysts John Garcia and Adam Friedman, along with Tyler James of InsideNDSports.com to tackle three topics and determine whether they believe each statement is FACT or FICTION.

Friedman: FICTION. Christian Ingram is a fantastic defensive line prospect and earned his initial four-star rating just a couple of days ago. The massive defensive lineman is nimble and has the ability to overpower offensive linemen who stand in his way. That being said, Isaiah Campbell appears to be much more advanced and has a similar frame to Ingram. Campbell’s quickness at the snap combined with his sense of urgency and playing strength should help him see the field fairly early in his college career. It will be really important for him to develop physically once he arrives at the next level, but there won’t be as steep a learning curve for him as there will be for Ingram.

Spiegelman: FICTION. The two prospects will both be forces on the defensive front, but in different capacities. Campbell possesses one of the most intriguing athletic profiles as a defensive lineman. At 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds, the one-time Clemson verbal clocked a sub-5-second 40, a 7.6-second short shuttle with a 9′ 2″ broad jump. Campbell is twitched-up and is explosive off the line with a stellar motor. New offer Ingram is a massive interior DL prospect at 6-foot-6 and 285 pounds. A multi-sport athlete, the big-bodied DT is also powerful with short-area quickness and a ton of length at his disposal. Clemson followed suit with Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Auburn in offering Ingram, who has the traits to be a difference-maker on the inside. However, long-term there’s a lot to love about Campbell with his plus measurables and production at a premium position.

Garcia: FACT. There are three now, so it wouldn’t be crazy to see that number double in the coming months considering the most recent NFL Drafts have been plenty wide receiver heavy. Seven just went in the first round in the spring, so getting closer to that number makes a lot of sense. With the current rankings, Dallas Wilson, Vernell Brown III and Talyn Taylor would be the trio to earn the honor. While each has a sell towards five-star candidacy, various others ranked in the range like top slot Winston Watkins Jr. or big, athletic types like Kaliq Lockett or CJ Wiley eventually making the conversation. With the way the game is going, and with the way these seniors have kicked off their final Friday night run, wide receiver is becoming the next premium position so it’s easier to get more of them closer to the five-star bump all together.

Spiegelman: FACT. Vernell Brown and Caleb Cunningham are two prospects that have been on the border of the five-star threshold for long stretches of the off-season following breakthroughs last fall. Brown is so dynamic and so polished, not to mention has it in his pedigree, and it’s been a theme from January now into the midway point of the fall. Cunningham is an alien with his combination of size and skill-set. He’s been exceptional anchoring the Ackerman (Miss.) Choctaw County offense with explosive plays week in and week out.The third name that I’m throwing into the conversation is four-star Florida WR commit CJ Wiley, who like Cunningham has produced big play for the Milton (Ga.) offense each and every week. Wiley also has NFL pedigree and is spectacular making plays all over the field and creating mismatches with his size, range and ball skills against elite competition in the Peach State. His senior season production is compelling, to say the least.

James: FICTION. Notre Dame is certainly one of the teams to watch for Tim Griffin, but his recruitment is in the midst of taking off, so it’s hard to say how things will shake out from here. It wouldn’t be surprising if he adds another dozen offers in the next month. Notre Dame recently decided to start pushing for another defensive lineman in the class, and it likes what it’s seen out of Griffin. How Griffin’s visit schedule shakes out will likely dictate how serious a contender the Irish are. Then we’ll see who else emerges as a major contender.

Spiegelman: FICTION. Notre Dame extended an offer to the touted four-star defensive end amid a breakout senior season at Covington (Ga.) Alcovy High. The Irish jumped into the race along with Florida State, Alabama and Cincinnati, which hosted Griffin for an official visit last weekend. Next up, Griffin will return to Alabama for the Georgia game, and there’s a sense that Cincinnati and Alabama are setting the pace of this recruitment in the early going. Griffin has official visits lined up to Alabama as well as to Notre Dame and Florida State, and there’s a sense this could get a bit more interesting as visits pick up and we inch closer to a decision.
