Canada’s Marina Stakusic records first-round upset at Guadalajara Open

Marina Stakusic has another nice win for her resume.

The Canadian teen upset Anna Karolína Schmiedlova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the Guadalajara Open on Tuesday.

Schmiedlova, ranked 98th in the world, finished fourth at this summer’s Olympics in Paris.

Stakusic, a 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., is ranked 155th.

The unheralded Stakusic made headlines late last year when she helped Canada win the Billie Jean King Cup.

It’s been an up-and-down 2024 for Stakusic, with highlights including a first-round win at her hometown National Bank Open and qualifying for her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon.

Stakusic next faces No. 1 seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.
