Karla Sofía Gascón First Trans Actress Nominated

Fresh from making Golden Globes history, Karla Sofía Gascón has now become the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for a BAFTA Film Award.

The Spanish performer has been recognized in the Leading Actress category for her role in Emilia Pérez, in which she stars as a Mexican drug kingpin who transitions into a woman.

Gascón will compete for the BAFTA prize alongside five other nominees: Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun), Demi Moore (The Substance), Mikey Madison (Anora), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked).

BAFTA counts Elliot Page as a past transgender film nominee for his role in Juno, but this was before his transition. Annie Wallace, a transgender actress, was nominated for a Scottish BAFTA Award in 2016 for her role in soap Hollyoaks.

Gascón got a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, but lost out on the prize to Moore. She was, however, one of four performers to share the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Emilia Pérez clinched 11 BAFTA Film Award nominations, second only to Conclave. Gascón’s co-stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña were nominated in the Supporting Actress category. Jacques Audiard will compete for the director prize, while the picture is also up for Best Film.

The BAFTA Film Awards take place on February 16 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The event will broadcast on BBC1 and stream on BritBox in North America. David Tennant returns as host.
