A police manhunt is underway for a man who allegedly stabbed a taxi driver.

It’s understood a verbal argument over the fare erupted shortly after the man was picked up from Eve Street in Guildford, in Sydney‘s west, at about 4.30pm on Friday.

Police allege the man got out of the taxi and approached the driver’s side before pulling out a knife and stabbing at the driver’s hands.

The pair were captured throwing punches in nearby Bright Park before the passenger fled the scene on foot down a nearby street.

‘Police were told an unknown male stabbed the man during a dispute,’ a police spokesperson said.

‘The 40-year-old was treated for minor injuries before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.’

The man was captured on CCTV running down a suburban street as paramedics treated the driver for cuts to his hands and arms.

He was taken by ambulance to Sydney’s Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

The incident has led to calls for greater protection for taxi drivers.

‘Let’s put this in perspective, a passenger allegedly carried a knife into the taxi,’ NSW NSW Taxi Council CEO Nick Abrahim told 9News

‘Can you imagine for a moment that person goes to another person’s workplace carrying a weapon of a knife?

‘We’ve got to protect our drivers.’

Police are urging anyone who can help with their inquiries to come forward.

The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
