A British tourist has drowned in front of his wife after being swept away by strong currents while swimming off an Indian beach.

The 72-year-old died on Friday evening at the Talpona beach in Canacona, in the western state of Goa, the Times of India reports.

Local police said he got carried away by a strong current after going for a swim with his wife.

The couple raised alarm as they drifted into the sea and lifesavers pulled them both ashore on jet-skis, according to local media.

Both were given CPR and while his wife could be resuscitated, the British man was declared dead after being taken to a local hospital.

The married couple were regular visitors in Goa and had been on holiday in the region for 15 days when the husband died, police said.

Sources told local media the British man married his wife a year and a half ago.

An autopsy was ordered after police registered the man’s death as ‘unnatural’.

MailOnline has contacted the Foreign Office for comment.

This comes just a month after a British woman drowned in front of her horrified son after she was dragged into the sea near a famed temple in India

The 84-year-old woman was visiting the town of Mamallapuram, in southeast India, with her son on February 12.

The pair went to a temple that sits on the shore of the town, and visited a beach next to it, both of them deciding to go into the Bay of Bengal sea.

Authorities said that a strong tide is believed to have pulled the woman away from the beach.

Her son was unsuccessful in his attempts to rescue her, and an hour later her body washed ashore.

After police were notified of the incident, they sent her body to the Government Hospital, in Chengalpattu, roughly 18 miles away.

Local media reported that police were preparing to have her body flown back to the UK.
