With bats characteristically quiet, Blue Jays lose to rain, Royals in series finale

KANSAS CITY – A painful error led to the Toronto Blue Jays’ first loss of the week and an avoidable rookie mistake contributed to their second.

As for the third? It’s hard to find much fault with how the Blue Jays played in a rain-shortened 2-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals Thursday, but it counts the same in the standings nonetheless. 

Now 13-13, the Blue Jays head back to Toronto having lost four of their last five after a Salvador Perez two-run homer off Jose Berrios made the difference in a five-inning game at Kauffman Stadium.

Offensively, the Blue Jays’ bats were characteristically quiet as they scored just one run on three hits in the series finale. But they were facing Royals ace Cole Ragans and they only had five chances to bat before the rain arrived – the minimum allowed under MLB rules. At least the Blue Jays didn’t get in their own way this time.

On the mound, Berrios was stellar, allowing only three hits on a day the rain fell steadily. But since he hung a slurve to Perez with a runner on in the first inning, the Royals took an early lead against Toronto’s Opening Day starter.

In total, the right-hander threw 67 pitches, walking three while striking out one, but Ragans was that much more effective. The only run the left-hander allowed came in the fourth inning, when Justin Turner doubled to left-centre and scored on an Ernie Clement RBI single.

And really, that was it. No drama and no mental mistakes but no offence to speak of and no win, either. A road trip that started in promising fashion with consecutive wins in San Diego ends with three straight losses.

As silver linings go this is a small one, but it’s worth noting that the rain provided the entire Blue Jays bullpen with a day off before Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers arrive in Toronto for three days starting Friday.

That’s especially noteworthy as Bowden Francis was placed on the injured list with right forearm extensor tendinitis before Thursday’s game. Under those circumstances, Yariel Rodriguez will no longer be part of a tandem and will instead operate a little more like a traditional starter, likely going 4-5 innings at a time.

“He’s fairly built up, so hopefully it can be a pretty regular go until Bowden gets back,” manager John Schneider said.

Eventually, the Blue Jays hope to have upward pressure from Alek Manoah, whose rehab work continued Wednesday with a three-inning appearance on a chilly day in Buffalo. The right-hander threw 88 pitches while allowing six earned runs on seven hits, including two home runs, and four walks.

“Not ideal,” Schneider said. “A lot of pitches. I know it’s cold, but it wasn’t the next step forward that we were hoping for.”

The conditions made it tough for Manoah to grip the ball at times, but team decision-makers wanted to see better command regardless. The Blue Jays are still making plans for Manoah’s next appearance, but it’ll likely come at triple-A sometime next week.

More pressing, though, is the question of how soon the Blue Jays can start scoring runs in bunches. Thursday’s game marked the 17th consecutive time they’ve failed to score more than five runs — a problematic streak that puts extra pressure on the pitching and defence even when they’re leading.

How to Claim Your Part of a $5.6 Million Ring Settlement

The Federal Trade Commission said this week that some people who bought certain home security cameras made by Ring, which is owned by Amazon, would be eligible for refunds for their purchase. The payments, totaling more than $5.6 million, are part of settlement between Ring and the F.T.C. over charges that the company failed to protect customer accounts.

Here’s what to know.

The F.T.C. sued Ring last May, charging the company with allowing employees and contractors to access customers’ private video footage. The agency said in its complaint that Ring used the videos to train computer algorithms without first getting customers’ consent. Ring also failed to have proper protections, which made customer accounts, videos and cameras more vulnerable to hacking, the F.T.C. said.

The F.T.C. and Ring reached a settlement that month. As part of the agreement, Ring paid a settlement that would be used for customer refunds, deleted all private videos that it shouldn’t have access to, and established a privacy and security program. The F.T.C. is now using the money Ring paid to send 117,044 PayPal payments to affected customers.

Ring did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But in a statement after the settlement, Ring said that it had addressed issues about its security and privacy practices “well before” the F.T.C.’s lawsuit, and that the agency “mischaracterizes our security practices; and ignores the many protections we have in place for our customers.”

If you had a Ring account and certain types of Ring devices, such as the indoor camera models Stick Up Cam and Indoor Cam, before Feb. 1, 2018, , you are eligible for a refund, according to a court order.

The defendant — in this case, Ring — is typically required to provide a list of customers, their contact information and how much they paid. The F.T.C. will use the information to send payments.

Eligible customers should have already received an email from the F.T.C.

Your payment depends on the type of Ring device you owned and the time you had your account.

If you are eligible for a refund, you should have received an email from the agency (from the address subscribe@subscribe.ftc.gov) before Tuesday. Since payments were issued on Tuesday, you should have received another email from PayPal about the refund. You have to redeem the payment by May 22, or it will be returned to the F.T.C.

One in Five Milk Samples Nationwide Shows Genetic Traces of Bird Flu

Federal regulators have discovered fragments of bird flu virus in roughly 20 percent of retail milk samples tested in a nationally representative study, the Food and Drug Administration said in an online update on Thursday.

Samples from parts of the country that are known to have dairy herds infected with the virus were more likely to test positive, the agency said. Regulators said that there is no evidence that this milk poses a danger to consumers or that live virus is present in the milk on store shelves, an assessment public health experts have agreed with.

But finding traces of the virus in such a high share of samples from around the country is the strongest signal yet that the bird flu outbreak in dairy cows is more extensive than the official tally of 33 infected herds across eight states.

“It suggests that there is a whole lot of this virus out there,” said Richard Webby, a virologist and influenza expert at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Dr. Webby said that he believed it was still possible to eradicate the virus, which is known as H5N1, from the nation’s dairy farms. But it will be difficult to design effective control measures without knowing the scope of the outbreak, he said.

The findings also raise questions about how the virus has evaded detection and where else it might be silently spreading. Some scientists have criticized the federal testing strategy as too limited to reveal the true extent of viral spread.

Until Wednesday, when the Department of Agriculture announced mandatory testing of dairy cows moving across state lines, testing of cows had been voluntary and primarily focused on cows with obvious symptoms.

As of Wednesday, just 23 people had been tested for the virus, while 44 people were being monitored after exposure to it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A widespread outbreak in cows would pose a greater risk to farm workers, the dairy industry and public health more broadly. Sustained spread among cows would give the virus more opportunities to acquire mutations that make it more transmissible among humans.

The F.D.A. did not provide clarification on Thursday regarding the number or sources of the samples.

“You’d want to go not just to the places you knew there was activity and cows — you want to go to places where at least there’s no reported” bird flu, Dr. Webby said.

Experts believe that the process of pasteurization, in which milk is briefly heated, should inactivate this bird flu virus, which known as H5N1.

“And when you destroy the virus, it’s going to release genetic material,” said Samuel Alcaine, a microbiologist and food scientist at Cornell University. The genetic fragments left behind are not capable of causing infection.

“It’s not surprising” to find them in milk, he added. “It doesn’t mean that the milk is not safe.”

Federal officials are still conducting the time-intensive tests required to determine whether any viable virus remains in the milk after pasteurization. Scientists have said that prospect is very unlikely.

Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said at a news briefing Wednesday that some federally sponsored researchers had tested for live virus in retail milk but had not found any, a sign that pasteurization had killed the virus before the milk reached grocery shelves.

Dr. Marrazzo cautioned that while the results were a small sample, the findings were “welcome news.”

“To really understand the scope here, we need to wait for the F.D.A. efforts,” she said.

Finding traces of the virus in 20 percent of commercial milk samples does not mean that 20 percent of the nation’s dairy herds are infected, experts cautioned. “It’s too early to try to do that back-of-the-napkin kind of calculation,” Dr. Alcaine said.

Milk from several farms is typically pooled. If the virus turns up in lots of milk samples drawn from one pool, it could mean that many cows are infected — or that a smaller number of infected cows are shedding large quantities of virus, Dr. Alcaine said.

Even in the latter case, however, a 20 percent positivity rate would suggest far more than 33 herds are infected, he noted.

In the Wednesday news briefing, Dr. Prater pointed to the novelty of the research effort. No studies have ever been completed on the effects of pasteurization on the bird flu virus in milk, he said.

Regulators were examining milk at various points in the commercial supply chain, he added, including milk on grocery shelves, as well as studying potential differences among milk products, such as those between whole milk and cream, Dr. Prater said.

Tribit XSound Go: Despite being on the market for several years, the Tribit XSound Go remains one of the top Bluetooth speakers for the money. Besides sounding decent for streaming your favorite music and more, this affordable Bluetooth speaker is also fully waterproof. It has had some small upgrades over the years.

Anker Motion Boom: Anker’s more expensive Soundcore Motion Boom Plus (see above) is a substantial sound upgrade over the original Motion Boom but this model remains a very good mini boom box for the money. Equipped with a handle and weighing a little over 4 pounds, the speaker reminds me of one of those giant flashlights or “floating lanterns” that were in vogue about 30 years ago. For the record, the Motion Boom actually does float and is fully waterproof with an IPX7 rating. 

UE Hyperboom: Ultimate Ears’ Boom Bluetooth speakers come in a few different sizes, but none of them are as big as the Hyberboom. A supersize wireless speaker that tips the scales at a hefty 13 pounds, the Hyperboom makes the UE Megaboom 3 look unquestionably puny. It’s not cheap, but its sound quality is better than a lot of the jumbo portable speakers on the market right now. Read our review.

Marshall Willen: Marshall’s little mono Willen speaker is similar to Bose’s SoundLink Micro and other micro speakers like the Tribit StormBox Micro 2. Also like those speakers, it has an integrated strap on its base so you can clip it onto a backpack or even to your bike’s handlebars. Its 2-inch full-range driver and two passive radiators put out more sound than you’d think it would for its tiny size, and it offers decent clarity as well as just enough bass to avoid sounding tinny (you can choose from three preset sound modes). 

Tribit StormBox: The StormBox looks like a cross between a UE and a JBL speaker. We suspect that’s not an accident. This fully waterproof speaker costs about significantly less than the JBL Flip 5 and Flip 6 and produces a bigger sound. Its rechargeable battery offers up to 20 hours of battery life for playing music and more. Tribit’s XSound speakers are probably a better value, but the StormBox is more stylish.

Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 (2nd Gen): A couple of years ago, Bang & Olufsen upgraded its dome-shaped aluminum-clad A1 speaker with improved battery life, better speakerphone performance (it now has a three-microphone array) and slightly improved sound. It’s not only the smallest wireless speaker from the Danish company, it’s technically the most affordable.

Sonos Roam: Available in white or black for $179, the Roam is currently the smallest and most affordable Sonos speaker (if you don’t count those $99 Sonos-compatible Symfonisk Ikea Wi-Fi bookshelf speakers), although it’s fairly expensive for a mini wireless speaker. This Sonos Roam model, like the bigger Sonos Move 2 portable speaker, is equipped with both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and can tap into an existing Sonos multiroom audio system and link with other Series 2-compatible Sonos speakers.

Bose SoundLink Micro: Although a little pricey and due to be upgraded, the Bose SoundLink Micro sounds remarkably decent for its tiny size, delivering more bass than other pocketable speakers. It’s a fully waterproof Bluetooth speaker and is available in three color options, although the blue version appears to be hard to find. 

Anker Soundcore Motion Plus: Anker’s Soundcore Motion Plus came out in 2019, but it remains one of the best-sounding speakers for around $100. It’s larger than many mini Bluetooth speakers, but it’s still compact. It manages to sound quite a bit fuller than much of the competition in its price range, with bigger bass, more volume and better clarity. It’s also fully waterproof (IPX7-rated) and has support for the aptX streaming codec for devices like Samsung’s Galaxy phones that support it.

Bang & Olufsen Beosound Explore: While it’s a little overpriced for the sound quality it ultimately delivers, the Beosound Explore is a very good little speaker that has a sleek, eye-catching design, is fully waterproof and dustproof (IP67 rating), and offers excellent battery life, with up to 27 hours of music listening at moderate volume levels. 

Monoprice Soundstage 3: Monoprice tends to make pretty generic-looking electronic products, and its understated Soundstage 3 Bluetooth speaker probably isn’t going to wow you with its design although its minimalist aesthetic has its appeal. I wouldn’t buy this speaker at its list price of $250, but it’s often discounted to closer to $150, where it’s a good value thanks to its ability to play big sound with strong bass and decent clarity, with 50 watts of power that drives a 5.25-inch “concave aluminum cone woofer” flanked by two 1-inch silk-dome tweeters. It also has good connectivity options, including digital optical, 3.5mm analog and RCA analog wired inputs that allow you to connect your television or another stereo component. There’s also a sub-out port. 

Tribit XSound Mega: Over the last few years, Tribit has made several Bluetooth speakers that deliver a lot of boom for the buck. Add its new XSound Mega to the list. Tribit is billing the XSound Mega as more of an outdoor speaker — a lanyard is included for toting it around as a sort of mini boombox — but it works just fine indoors. It has an LED light show that you can turn on or off and there are three EQ settings for sound: XBass, Music and Audiobook. Additionally, it can be used as a power bank to charge your mobile devices.

Paying tribute to legendary broadcaster Bob Cole

My first game at Hockey Night in Canada was Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003 — Montreal at Ottawa. The hotel set up a shuttle to take us to morning skate. When I walked outside, Harry Neale was in the back seat. I opened the door to sit next to him.

He told me to sit in the front. “Bob (Cole) and I like to sit in the back,” he said. “We like to discuss the game. You sit up there.”

So I did.

Minutes later, Bob walked towards the SUV. He saw me. He frowned and paused. Then, he opened the door. I could hear Harry laughing.

“Young man,” he said, sternly, “I sit in the front seat.”

A few years later, we were doing a Montreal/Boston playoff series. After landing at Logan Airport, we grabbed our luggage and went to get a taxi. After loading our bags, I took a half-step towards the front and remembered the rules, immediately going to the back. The adjustment was barely noticeable. 

Bob got in the front, and we started driving. Two minutes later, he turned to look at me.

“Do you think I didn’t notice that you stepped towards the front? I figured by now, you wouldn’t forget.”

The rest of us started laughing. I thought I’d gotten away with it.

As the tributes flow in, many remember — with good reason — his awesome ability to manoeuvre with the crowd. He is the best ever at riding the waves of a crowd’s emotion, flowing with it, rising with it, allowing it to be heard. Bob only cared about whistle-to-whistle. That was his time. 

He was such a great teammate, always encouraging, and everyone who worked with him understood not to interfere during play. If I had a report out of a commercial, there was a good chance that, 15 seconds before we returned, he was going say, “This is a big faceoff. Don’t talk through it.” 

There were so many great moments. The 1972 Summit Series, on radio. “They’re going home!” during the wild January 1976 exhibition between the Philadelphia Flyers and Soviet Red Army. Joe Sakic’s Olympic clincher in 2002. To Bob, those were magnificent calls at major times, but he prepared for Game 29 of the season as if it was just as important.

Bob loved being the conduit to the fans. He loved seeing the players, being in the building for a big game. He never, ever lost that passion. We loved his stories. And his opinions. When he was on a roll, there was nothing better. 

There was Hall-of-Famer Terry Sawchuk borrowing Bob’s car when the Boston Bruins played a game in Newfoundland. There was bowling with the legendary Gordie Howe when Mr. Hockey visited Red Wings teammate Alex Faulkner, another Newfoundlander. 

Who won?

“Gordie wins everything,” Bob answered.

If he had one regret, it was not shaking Frank Sinatra’s hand. Bob loved Sinatra; travelled with CDs of his music to relax with. The Chairman of the Board (as he was known) once walked through the crowd during a concert Bob attended and shook the hand of the person next to him. Bob always thought he should have either a) grabbed it instead or b) reached out the moment that first handshake was done. 

Once, he was sitting next to eight-time Stanley Cup champion coach Toe Blake, who pointed at an out-of-town score. “Is that game over?” he asked.

“I think so,” Bob replied.

Blake slammed his hand on the table. 

“Don’t tell me what you think,” he declared. “Tell me what you know.” Bob loved that line; used it all the time.

He was extremely particular about proper pronunciation. If the player didn’t care, he’d ask, “How do your parents say it?” At the 2002 Olympics, he asked producer Jeff Girodat to drive him to a distant practice rink to learn the proper pronunciations of the Swiss players. By the time they got there, the team already was finished. Bob got out of the car, stood in front of their bus and asked head coach Ralph Krueger to come out. Krueger did, helping Bob get what he needed.

God help you if you gave him wrong info about a name. During one of those Boston series, I referred to Vladimir Sobotka as Soh-boat-ka. Bob heard this and confronted me. He said it was Soh-bot-ka and didn’t like that we had two different versions on-air (he was right about that). I told him one of the other Bruins said that was the right way to say it. He went to coach Claude Julien, and Claude thought I was wrong. Bob then asked if we could talk to Sobotka himself.

So before the next game, Bob, Claude, Bruins media-relations whiz Matthew Chmura and I waited for Sobotka’s arrival. I was sweating. When he arrived, Claude asked him to come into the room. Bob told me I was not allowed to speak, so as not to prejudice the witness. Claude explained the situation and asked him to pronounce his name.

Thankfully, Sobotka exonerated me. I am convinced, however, he thought the whole situation insane.

But, as much as Bob loved calling games, there were two things he loved more: Newfoundland and his family. He was hugely proud of his home province, overjoyed when Hockey Night in Canada headed to Bonavista to do a feature when Michael Ryder burst on the NHL scene as a rookie in 2003-04. 

When Bob was working the Olympics, everyone knew to let him relax when not calling a game. That’s a gruelling schedule. But when Brad Gushue went for gold against Finland in the 2006 men’s curling event, he was asked if he wanted to discuss how big this was for Newfoundland. (An excellent curler, Bob competed twice in the Brier.) He was honoured, and it might have been the only time he cared about another sporting event more than the one he was working.

We had some long drives together — Toronto to Buffalo, Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. On those drives, we would discuss family. There was nothing that made Bob more proud than his children: Christian, Hilary, Megan and Robbie. He could talk about each of them for hours, and there was at least one trip where the entire drive consisted of him happily waxing poetic about their lives. Not only was he their father, he was their biggest fan. 

A lot of Canadians — a lot of hockey fans — are feeling sadness. But we should also remember the great times, and there were so many. It doesn’t matter if you knew him in-person or you knew him as a great broadcaster. He enriched all of our lives, together.

PWHL announces annual end-of-season awards, MVP named after Billie Jean King

With the PWHL’s inaugural regular season a week away from its conclusion, it’s time to start handing out some hardware.

The league revealed 10 unique awards to be handed out annually, recognizing achievements made on and off the ice.

Headlining the end-of-season accolades for years to come will be the Billie Jean King MVP award. For the post-season, the PWHL will hand out the Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP award.

“It is only fitting that the league’s most valuable players will be recognized with awards that reflect the leadership of Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss,” said Jayna Hefford, PWHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations in a statement. “To have these awards named in their honour advances the sports legacy of these pioneers, who have devoted themselves to women’s equal rights in sports.”

Here’s a full list of the awards up for grabs:

Billie Jean King MVP Award

Awarded to the player considered most valuable to their team’s success throughout the regular season.

Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP Award

Awarded to the player considered most valuable to their team’s success throughout the playoffs.

Forward of the Year

Awarded to the forward who showcases the most outstanding ability at the position throughout the regular season.

Defender of the Year

Awarded to the defender who showcases the most outstanding ability at the position throughout the regular season.

Goaltender of the Year

Awarded to the goaltender who showcases the most outstanding ability at the position throughout the regular season.

Rookie of the Year

Awarded to the player who showcases the most outstanding ability throughout their first regular season of professional play. Players eligible for the Rookie of the Year Award must be competing in their first season of professional hockey in North America and begin the season in their 25th birth year or younger. For the inaugural season, players born in 1998 and later are eligible for the Rookie of the Year Award.

Coach of the Year

Awarded to the head coach whose contributions most impacted their team’s on-ice success throughout the regular season.

Community Leadership Award

Awarded to the player whose leadership extends beyond the ice to foster positive change in the community.

Points Leader

Awarded to the player with the most points scored at the conclusion of the regular season.

Top Goal Scorer

Awarded to the player with the most goals scored at the conclusion of the regular season.
