ATLANTA – Ten pitches and three batters into his latest gem, Jose Berrios appeared to be in some discomfort. He’d just struck out Marcell Ozuna when he wiped his brow and winced, prompting a charge to the mound by manager John Schneider and trainer Jose Ministral. During the discussion, he made a line with his finger down his forehead but insisted he was fine and proceeded to shove for six innings in a 9-5 Toronto Blue Jays win over Atlanta.
The issue for Berrios was the sudden onset of a piercing headache, something he hadn’t experienced on the mound before, far different from the illness he fought through last Sunday in Minnesota, when he tossed six shutout innings on only 63 pitches in a 15-0 rout. Before his outing Saturday, Schneider said his ace right-hander was “a lot better” but “still feeling the effects” of the bug, which Berrios said included an issue in his mouth that made it difficult for him to eat in recent days.
He only turned the corner Friday and that chase sinker to get Ozuna aside, he showed no signs of it, allowing a run on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts en route to his career-best 15th win of the season, a milestone with meaning for the 30-year-old.

“Finally, I get to 15,” said Berrios. “I always had a goal for myself to try and get 20 one year. We’re keeping track of that. Better than winning is winning again. I don’t care about what kind of stats or numbers they use for paying us or whatever, no matter how, we have to win. When we win it’s fun. So every win I’m going to savour and is a great accomplishment for me and the team, too.”
Berrios twice previously finished with 14 wins, in 2017 and 2019, the latter also the year he logged a personal-high 200.1 innings. A new benchmark in workload is also in range for him, as he’s at 176.1 innings in 2024 – good for fifth in the majors – and is in line to make four more starts this season.
“I’m trying to stay out there, in my 32 outings, trying to get to that amount of innings,” he said. “It’s a great goal for me. I’ve been working on preparing myself day-by-day to be out there and help my team compete and also pitch a lot of innings.”
Schneider said that “as of now,” the Blue Jays plan to remain on turn, at least through a three-game series beginning Monday with the visiting New York Mets, which would leave Berrios with outings against St. Louis, at Texas, versus Boston and Miami in the season finale.

It’s possible that the Blue Jays insert Jake Bloss to make a spot-start at some point to give the rotation some extra rest which might disrupt that plan, but he could also fill in for Yariel Rodriguez once to help manage his innings.
“I think it’s lined up well where most of those guys will be on extra rest and if we can get (Berrios to 200), that’d be great,” said Schneider. “Chris (Bassitt) got 200 last year and Jose takes such good care of himself, he’ll be ready for anything. Getting over this last week and a half, physically and how he was feeling, he’s going to want to keep going. Don’t really have any concerns with him going forward.”
Given the current roll Berrios is on, he doesn’t look like someone in need of a break.
He went through a seven-start rough patch from mid-June to mid-July, allowing 28 earned runs on 38 hits and 17 walks in 37.2 innings over that span, but righted himself July 28 with a seven-inning, one-run gem against Texas.
A five-inning, six-run blip against the Yankees followed Aug. 3 but in his six outings since then, he’s allowed only seven earned runs on 30 hits and six walks with 36 strikeouts in 40.2 innings.
“Those days, it was my concentration, my focus was off,” Berrios said of his difficult stretch. “That’s when we started to (see that) we’re not going to make the playoffs. … I noticed that, I said, we need to keep working, we have to respect my teammates, my team, so then I started to be back to the Jose Berrios I am and I’ve been doing my work.”
Better command of his sinker and increased use of an improving cutter have also been instrumental in his turnaround, with Schneider adding that “he’s pitching with a great deal of confidence right now. When you have a veteran pitcher kind of rolling, it’s easy to do. He’s been really efficient with his pitches, too.”
Paced by two homers and four hits by Spencer Horwitz, an offensive onslaught helped along with some sketchy Atlanta defence behind Spencer Schwellenbach.

Horwitz opened the scoring with a leadoff homer in the second and then doubled up the lead to open the fourth, when two more runs came home on RBI doubles by Ernie Clement and Joey Loperfido, both after Addison Barger reached on a Luke Williams throwing error to extend the inning.
Horwitz added an RBI double in the fifth, took third on another error and scored on Will Wagner’s groundout. Wagner added three hits, including an RBI single that capped a three-run ninth that opened up a 9-1 lead.
The second multi-homer game of Horwitz’s young career was the result of some recent drill work with assistant hitting coach Matt Hague pulled from the “great bag of tricks that we can lean on that we’ve built.”

Against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday and Wednesday, Horwitz noticed his hands getting loose on some groundouts to the right side, so he took some flips from Hague close to his body to get his hands in tight.
The goal is “not letting my hands get away from my body, as a lot of old-school hitters would say, stay inside the ball,” Horwitz explained. “Stuff like that to try and pull the ball with some backspin and not just hooking it all the time on the ground.”
