Jerry Jones: Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy could get contract extension

While many Dallas Cowboys fans have called for the firing of Mike McCarthy, his boss may go in the other direction.

When asked if McCarthy could, in fact, get a contract extension at the end of the year, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones didn’t rule it out.

“I don’t think that’s crazy at all,” Jones said on 105.3 The FAN in Dallas, per Jon Machota of The Athletic.

“This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He has great ideas. We got a lot of football left.”

McCarthy, in the final year of a five-year contract, is in the midst of a 4-7 season with the Cowboys. The team’s starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, is out for the rest of the year with a hamstring injury.

The Cowboys, who haven’t won the Super Bowl since the 1995 season, snapped a five-game losing streak with a wild win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Dallas hosts the New York Giants on Sunday.

McCarthy guided the Cowboys to 12-5 records the past three years, but the team has won just one playoff game under his watch.

The Pittsburgh native coached the Green Bay Packers from 2006-18, winning the Super Bowl in the 2010 season.
